What Brooklyn Chimneys Actually Deal With

Most chimneys in Brooklyn are old masonry, often more than a century old, and many are shared with the house next door. The problems we see come from a few places.

Coal-era flues and closed-up fireplaces

Brownstones and row houses were built with several fireplaces, many of them sized for coal and later sealed off. The flues behind them are frequently unlined, or lined with clay tiles that have cracked. Before a fireplace goes back into use, a camera inspection shows whether it needs a liner, a repair, or should stay decorative.

Boilers and water heaters venting into old chimneys

Many buildings vent the boiler and water heater into an original masonry chimney. Their exhaust is acidic and condenses inside the flue, eating mortar and tile from the inside out. A correctly sized stainless steel liner protects the chimney and helps the appliance draft properly.

Weather on the roof

Freeze-thaw cycles, wind-driven rain and years of patching take a toll on crowns, mortar joints and flashing on flat Brooklyn roofs. Leaks often show up first as a stain on a top-floor ceiling or around a fireplace.

Shared chimneys and building access

In attached houses, one chimney stack can serve more than one home, and the roof is often reached through a hatch. We plan access ahead of time and keep neighbors, boards and managing agents in the loop.

Straight answer policy. If the chimney is fine, we tell you it is fine and we leave. That happens often, and it is the reason people call us back the following year.

How it works

What a Brooklyn Visit Looks Like

We arrive in the window we gave you

Before we start, drop cloths go down and the fireplace opening is sealed. We wear boot covers on every visit, including the stairs.

Camera first, then the sweep

We run a camera up each flue from the firebox or boiler connection to the top, and you see the footage. On the roof we check the crown, cap and flashing.

A written report, not a sales pitch

The report separates what is urgent from what can safely wait a season. It is in plain English, with photos, so you can share it with a board, landlord or insurer.

Questions we get asked

Brooklyn Chimney FAQ

Where is your Brooklyn location?

American Chimney Company’s Brooklyn location is at 300 Cadman Plaza W, Brooklyn, NY 11201, by Cadman Plaza and Borough Hall. The Brooklyn number is (718) 814-9689.

My brownstone has a fireplace nobody has used in years. Can it be used again?

Often, but not before an inspection. Many Brooklyn row houses have fireplaces that were closed up decades ago, and the flues behind them were built for coal, are unlined or have cracked clay tiles. A camera inspection shows whether the flue is sound, needs a liner, or should stay decorative. We tell you which one it is before you light anything.

Our boiler vents into the chimney. Does that chimney need service?

Yes. In a lot of Brooklyn buildings the oil or gas boiler and the water heater vent into an old masonry chimney. Exhaust from those appliances is acidic and wears out unlined or tile-lined flues from the inside. An inspection checks that the flue is the right size and is drawing properly, and a stainless steel liner is the usual fix when it is not.

Do you work on co-ops, condos and shared buildings?

Yes. In attached houses and apartment buildings, chimneys are often shared or reached through a roof hatch, so we coordinate access with the owner, the board or the managing agent before the visit. We can send the inspection report and photos straight to whoever needs them.

We live in a historic district. Does that change chimney repairs?

It can. Several Brooklyn neighborhoods, including Brooklyn Heights, are designated historic districts. Exterior work there that changes how a chimney looks from the street may need approval from the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission. Repairs that match the existing brick and mortar usually go more smoothly, and we point out up front when work is likely to need approval.

Which neighborhoods do you serve from the Brooklyn location?

From Cadman Plaza we cover Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Windsor Terrace, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, Flatbush, Ditmas Park, Bay Ridge, Williamsburg, Greenpoint and the rest of Brooklyn. If your neighborhood is not listed, call; the answer is usually yes.
