Why Fairfield Chimneys Need More Than a Quick Sweep
Fairfield has some of the oldest houses in Connecticut, and a lot of fireplaces. Most chimneys here fall into one of three groups, and each wears out in its own way.
Antique colonials in Greenfield Hill and Southport
Greenfield Hill and the Southport historic district are full of 18th- and 19th-century houses with big center chimneys and several fireplaces. Many were built before flue liners existed, and the mortar is often a soft lime mix that modern cement-based patches damage. These chimneys need repairs that suit their age: matching mortar, matching brick or stone, and liners sized to each flue.
1920s and 1930s houses in Stratfield and north Fairfield
Around Black Rock Turnpike, Stratfield and the streets off the Merritt, many homes are Tudors and colonials from between the wars. Their clay flue tiles are now 90 years old or more. Many also had their heating switched from oil to gas while the chimney stayed as it was, so acidic condensation is wearing the flue from the inside. That damage cannot be seen from the ground; a camera inspection finds it.
Beach houses on the Sound
Near Fairfield Beach, Sasco Beach and Southport Harbor, salt air corrodes caps and chase covers early, and nor’easters drive rain sideways into any crack in the crown or gap in the flashing. A leak that would drip inland pours here. Every inspection near the water ends with a close look at the crown, cap, flashing and top courses of brick.
What we do in Fairfield
Complete Chimney & Fireplace Services
One crew, one standard, from the firebox to the cap. Every visit starts with a camera in the flue before anyone quotes a price.
Chimney Sweeping & Cleaning
Creosote and soot out with the opening sealed and a HEPA vacuum running. Before-and-after flue photos every visit.
Level 1 & 2 Inspections
Camera scan from firebox to crown with a written photo report. Level 2 is the one a home sale or an appliance change calls for.
Masonry Repair & Repointing
Eroded joints raked and repointed, spalled brick cut out and replaced, crowns rebuilt in proper mortar.
Rebuilds & Restoration
Partial rebuilds above the roofline to full teardown-and-rebuild, done to code and matched to the house.
Stainless Steel Liners
Correctly sized liners for the boiler, water heater or fireplace actually venting into the flue.
Caps, Crowns & Chase Covers
The weather side of chimney care and the cheapest leak you will ever prevent, especially this close to the bay.
Waterproofing & Flashing
Breathable masonry sealer plus roof-to-chimney flashing repair to stop wind-driven rain at the source.
Fireplace & Dryer Vent
Dampers, smoke chambers, gas fireplace tune-ups and full dryer-duct cleaning by the same crew.
How it works
What a Fairfield Visit Actually Looks Like
We arrive in the window we gave you
Drop cloths go down and the fireplace opening is sealed before any tool comes out. Boot covers on, every time.
Camera first, then the sweep
Each flue is scanned from the firebox to the crown and you see the footage. Houses with several fireplaces get every flue checked, not just the one you use most.
A written report, not a sales pitch
Urgent items separated from what can safely wait a season, in plain English, with prices you can check against the photos.

Questions we get asked
Fairfield Chimney FAQ
Do you have a local crew in Fairfield?
Yes. American Chimney Company works out of 1883 Black Rock Tpke, Fairfield, CT 06825 in north Fairfield, close to the Merritt Parkway. A call from Fairfield, Southport, Westport or Trumbull is a local call. Reach the Fairfield office at (585) 524-0162.
Our house in Greenfield Hill is over 200 years old. Can the chimney still be used?
Often, yes, but it needs a proper look first. Many antique center chimneys were built with no flue liner at all, or have clay liners that have cracked and shifted over the years. A Level 2 camera inspection shows exactly what is inside. If the flue is not safe as it is, a stainless steel liner sized to the fireplace usually lets you keep using it without changing how the chimney looks from outside.
We live near the beach. Does that change anything?
Yes. Salt air off Long Island Sound corrodes galvanized caps and chase covers early and keeps masonry damp longer. Coastal storms drive rain sideways into cracked crowns and lifted flashing. Houses near Fairfield Beach, Sasco Beach and Southport Harbor should have the crown, cap and flashing checked every year, not just the flue.
My boiler was switched from oil to gas. Does the chimney need a liner?
Very often. A modern gas boiler or water heater runs much cooler than the oil burner the flue was built for, so the exhaust condenses inside the chimney and the acidic moisture eats clay tiles and mortar from the inside. A Level 2 inspection tells you whether the flue is sized correctly and whether a stainless liner is needed.
Which towns do you serve from the Fairfield location?
From Black Rock Turnpike we cover Fairfield, Southport, Greenfield Hill, Stratfield, Fairfield Beach, Westport, Weston, Easton, Trumbull, Bridgeport, Black Rock, Stratford. If your town is not listed, ask; the answer is usually yes.
